Das Album ist der Höhepunkt eines frischen und rasanten Ansatzes der Band und des Produzenten Andrew Watt (Rolling Stones Iggy Pop Post Malone Miley Cyrus etc)Bei Gigaton hat die Band in mehreren Aufnahmesitzungen Songkonzepte erarbeitet. Insgesamt dauerte die Fertigstellung des Albums etwa drei Jahre. Für Dark Matter kamen alle Bandmitglieder in die Shangri-La-Studios ohne vorgefertigte Songideen und ohne eigene Instrumente. Die Kreativität fand in Echtzeit statt und war eine echte Gemeinschaftsleistung. Die LP wurde in drei Wochen fertiggestellt.In einem Interview mit Classic Rock sagte Mike McCready kürzlich [Andrew Watt] really kicked our asses got us focused and playing song after song. It took a long time to make Gigaton but this new one didn’t take long. Andrew was like: ‘You guys take forever to make records.
