The Messerschmitt Bf-109 was the primary fighter aircraft of the Luftwaffe during World War II with around 35 000 units produced between 1936 and 1945. It was developed as part of a German competition in 1933 and later outperformed its rival the He-112. Several versions were created including the Bf-109E (Emil) which was used in the Battle of France the Battle of Britain and on the Eastern Front. The Bf-109F (Friedrich) was known for its aerodynamics while the Bf-109G (Gustav) was the most widely produced featuring a more powerful engine. The final version the Bf-109K (Kurfürst) was the fastest reaching speeds of up to 730 km h. With its powerful armament and high performance the Bf-109 remained one of the most feared fighter aircraft of the war.
