Saber-tooth tigers had almost comically large teeth: these felines could open their jaws to a snake-worthy angle of 120 degrees or about twice as wide as a modern lion (or a gaping house cat). Paradoxically however the different species of Smilodon did not chew their prey with much force because they had to protect their precious canines from accidental breakage!
