In her dissertation published in 1915 Else Meißner deals with the social and economic reformist character of the decorative arts of her time. Contrary to what was propagated by industrialisation she did not consider the unity of practicality and beauty to be automatically given. Rather it was the task of the decorative arts to lend the necessary aesthetics to the functional form. A principle that should also be applied to mass production in order to give German workmanship its own inimitable character.
