Above all the Brexit vote by the British and the successes of populist politicians and parties in many countries have aroused new skepticism as to whether factual political decisions can really be left to "the people." What are we to make of this? Are we dealing with a return to realism or with a return of old anti-democratic prejudices? The book explores these questions and shows that the opportunities and risks of direct democracy cannot be assessed without a close look at how it is implemented.
