The increasing requirements on combustion engines like reduced fuel consumption and emissions as well as good driveability need an improvement of combustion and exhaust treatment processes and their control. This can be achieved by a higher variability with an increase of actuators and sensors in addition to structural improvements. Modern engines have therefore many manipulation variables and sensors and a complex electronic management. The design of the many control and also diagnosis functions requires model-based methods taking into account mechatronic engineering principles. The book treats physically-based as well as experimentally-gained engine models for gasoline and diesel engines and uses them for the design of the different control systems. The procedure from measurements over simulations to calibration on test benches is systematically described and demonstrated. Not only the stationary but also the dynamic behaviour of engines is taken into account. Several new control principles are shown like multivariable feedforward and feedback control based on nonlinear net models combustion pressure and HCCI control. Many new results with signal and process model-based fault diagnosis show how on-board fault diagnosis can be considerably improved. The book is oriented to advanced students working in control electrical mechanical and mechatronic engineering and will also be useful for practising engineers in the field of engine and automotive engineering.
